Small, lively and instantly recognisable by its call: the chiffchaff is one of Germany's most common songbirds and a true harbinger of spring. As early as late February, the first males return from their winter quarters in the Mediterranean or south-western Europe and begin their distinctive song, which gives the species its name. This clear 'chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff' makes it easy to locate, even when it remains hidden in dense vegetation.

This short-distance migrant has been breeding across Germany since the 19th century and has evolved from a typical woodland bird to one that comfortably lives alongside humans. In addition to deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests, it now increasingly inhabits parks, large gardens and semi-open cultural landscapes. Its brownish-olive plumage and pale eyebrow stripe are subtle yet defining features. As an insect-eater, the chiffchaff plays an important role in the ecosystem.
